Baros

Overview
Our Opinion
Baros holds a special place in Maldivian resort history — one of the first islands developed for tourism, originally built as a divers' base and just a short speedboat ride from Male. Under the stewardship of the late Dr Ibrahim Umar Maniku, it was reimagined as a five-star resort in 2004 and has been thoughtfully upgraded ever since. While newer and flashier resorts now dot the atolls, Baros has something rarer: genuine charm, earned over decades.

Accommodation is in traditionally styled Maldivian villas, both beachside and overwater, with and without private pools. Recent refurbishments have given the interiors a lighter, more open feel — even the entry-level Deluxe Villas are comfortable and well-appointed if you plan to spend most of your time exploring the island. Step up to the Suites or the Baros Residence and you get generous living space, a butler, welcome touches, and priority dining.

Food and service are genuinely first-rate. Lime is the main restaurant, serving international and Maldivian dishes in an elegant setting. Cayenne Grill offers intimate al fresco dining with a superb Teppanyaki corner. And then there's the Lighthouse — that unmistakable tented-roof icon. In our view, even with stiff competition across the Maldives, you would struggle to find a finer fine-dining experience. The lobster bisque alone is worth the visit. For lasting memories, we highly recommend a private sunset cruise on the dhoni Nooma and a Champagne breakfast on the Piano Deck.

Sails Bar is a wonderful recent addition — comfortably among the best resort bars in the Maldives, and a perfect foil to the more formal Lighthouse Lounge.

The real star, though, is the house reef. It has weathered coral bleaching better than most, teeming with colourful marine life. Turtles and reef sharks are regular companions when snorkelling.

Summary
Baros is an award-winning boutique resort on a lush coral island fringed by white sandy beaches and a thriving house reef. Known for discreet, personalised service and its rich natural surroundings, it has been a firm favourite in the Maldives for decades.

The resort sits just 25 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport — guests are welcomed with a signature drink and whisked away to the iconic Lighthouse almost before the journey has begun.

Accommodation is a thoughtfully curated collection of beachfront and overwater villas and suites, designed for privacy and immersion in the natural landscape. Beach options range from the Baros Villa and Deluxe Villa — with timber decks, four-poster beds and open-air bathrooms — to the Pool Villas with direct beach access and infinity plunge pools. At the top end, the Baros Residence, Baros Suites and Two Bedroom Retreat offer exceptional space, private pools and round-the-clock butler service. Overwater choices include Water Villas, Water Pool Villas and Water Pool Villas with generous sundecks, private pools and direct lagoon steps. All villas come with complimentary Wi-Fi, espresso machines, wine chillers, pillow menus and yoga mats.

Dining is a highlight. Lime Restaurant serves à la carte international and Maldivian dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. Cayenne Grill is an intimate thatched gazebo over the lagoon, specialising in premium grilled meats and seafood. The Lighthouse Restaurant is legendary for its fine-dining experience and expert wine pairings, while the Lighthouse Lounge above offers sunset Champagne with sweeping ocean views. Sails Bar is a casual cabana among the coconut palms, perfect for cocktails and light bites.

Beyond the dining, guests can unwind at Serenity Spa nestled in the foliage, join complimentary morning yoga on the Lighthouse deck, or swim in the overwater infinity pool. The island is famous for its marine life — the house reef is accessible directly from the beach, and the PADI Five Star Gold Palm dive centre runs small-group excursions for all levels.
