Our Opinion

Gili Lankanfushi wears its 'laid back luxury' and 'eco-friendly' credentials with real conviction. It's a resort of exceptional quality — the food is excellent, the service is outstanding, and there's a clear lineage from the original Soneva Fushi in its philosophy.

Every villa sits entirely over-water, crafted in a rustic-chic, Crusoe-inspired style that feels a world away from the marble-and-chandelier aesthetic so many resorts chase. Some villas gained private pools after the 2019 refurbishment, but honestly, we would rather take the steps straight into the lagoon for a swim or float in a hammock.

This is without question one of the Maldives' finest properties, set in a lively stretch of the North Male Atoll. For some, being so close to Male is a plus; for others craving true remoteness, it might give pause. Our view? They would be missing something special. Gili has a way of slowing you down, drawing you into its rhythm — and we are more than happy to go along with it.

Summary

Gili Lankanfushi occupies the private island of Lankanfushi in North Male Atoll — previously known as Soneva Gili by Six Senses. The resort is a 20-minute speedboat journey from Male International Airport.

The property comprises 45 overwater villas, among them Crusoe Residences and the boat-access-only Private Reserve. Each villa is designed with environmental sensitivity in mind, using sustainable materials and thoughtful detailing. Every villa has a private water garden, a sun deck, and a separate shower linked to the bathroom by an open-air walkway.

A dedicated Mr or Ms Friday is assigned to each villa — a nod to Robinson Crusoe's trusted companion. They can arrange excursions, spa treatments, sunset cruises, restaurant bookings, and even help with packing or unpacking. For families with young children, they also host storytelling and craft sessions.

Dining focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients served in striking settings that leave a lasting impression.

The resort takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. Sustainable building materials such as plantation teak, palm wood, and bamboo are used throughout. Each year, 0.5% of annual revenue goes toward community-focused socio-economic projects. Staff training in environmental management is ongoing, and guests are encouraged to participate in the resort's eco-conscious culture.
