Vakkaru Maldives
Our Opinion
Since opening in 2017, Vakkaru Maldives has matured into a refined luxury sanctuary where meticulous attention to detail and environmental care sit at the heart of everything. The island's lush, beautifully maintained foliage continues to thrive, with winding pathways now joined by a chef's garden and an orchid sanctuary that add bursts of colour and fragrance. This seamless blend of nature and luxury is a constant reminder of Vakkaru's commitment to protecting its pristine setting.
From late May through October, a selection of Overwater Villas will be enhanced with the addition of private pools. Initial works commence from 1 to 20 June, followed by the main construction period from 20 June to 15 September, during which the overwater jetty will be closed. From 15 September to 31 October, works reduce in scope and some overwater accommodations become available again.
The villas remain breathtaking, whether beachfront or suspended over the lagoon. All beach villas now feature upgraded private pools and outdoor showers, enhancing that tropical, indulgent feel. The one-bedroom and four-bedroom overwater residences continue to impress with their contemporary, spacious design and understated luxury. Every villa is fastidiously maintained, ensuring a flawless stay.
Dining options have expanded delightfully. Onu, a new Southeast Asian restaurant, brings vibrant flavours to the island, while the intimate Anguru Teppanyaki table offers sizzling theatrics by the Cabana Bar. Vakku Grill remains a firm favourite, now hosting occasional beach BBQ nights with extensive cooking stations, atmospheric lighting, and live music under the stars. Main restaurant Amaany's breakfast service could benefit from further enhancements to match the resort's overall excellence.
The Lagoon Bar sets the scene for sunset cocktails paired with delicious canapes, creating a relaxed yet chic vibe, while mixologist Sagar at the Cabana Bar dazzles with the perfect Angelfish Cocktail and his inventive variations: a smoked rosemary-infused Angelfish Breeze or the spicy Fiery Angelfish. Wine enthusiasts will find joy in the stylish Vakkaru Reserve's curated tastings.
Facilities continue to impress. The overwater spa, with its superb Balinese massages and lagoon-view relaxation area, is a haven of tranquillity. Families are well catered for: the Parrotfish Kids Club (accepting children from age three, or younger with babysitters) and the Coconut Club's teen-friendly activities and lounge areas ensure all ages are entertained. Active guests will appreciate the new padel court alongside pristine tennis courts.
Snorkelling remains a star attraction. The house reef teems with varied and colourful marine life. Numerous reef sharks glide near the Splash dive centre, while eagle rays patrol the drop-offs. Though coral recovery is ongoing (a widespread challenge), a kayak trip to the Blue Hole reveals resilient formations and colossal parrotfish. For a magical encounter, the private speedboat excursion to Turtle Point still delivers gentle, memorable drifts alongside turtles in crystal-clear waters.
Vakkaru Maldives continues to be a standout. Service is exemplary, blending warmth with precision, while dedicated butlers anticipate needs with quiet expertise. For understated luxury married with a profound respect for nature, and everything you could realistically want from a Maldivian holiday, Vakkaru deepens its charm on every visit and confidently earns its place on our Highly Recommended list.
