W Maldives completed a thorough refurbishment in 2025, and a recent return visit confirmed that the resort retains its position as one of the most distinctive and energetic options in the Maldives.

Set in North Ari Atoll and reached by a scenic seaplane flight from Male, W Maldives still feels like a stylish luxury playground but with a noticeably more refined finish than in earlier years. The villas have been completely refreshed, presenting a cleaner, more contemporary look that keeps the brand's confident personality intact. With only 75 villas (25 on the beach), each with its own private pool, the island manages an intimate feel alongside its lively atmosphere. The overwater villas in particular are well executed and feel spacious and modern.

The welcome was warm and efficient, and the attentiveness of the staff stood out throughout the stay. W's Whatever/Whenever ethos continues to define the experience, supported by a responsive WhatsApp-based concierge service. Senior management were visible and engaged throughout the visit, reflecting strong leadership on the island.

The house reef deserves particular praise. It ranks among the best in Ari Atoll, with easy access via marked channels from the beach. Coral starts remarkably close to shore and leads to a dramatic drop-off beyond. During a snorkel, we spotted turtles, reef sharks, trevally and an impressive variety of reef fish. For serious snorkellers, this is a genuine highlight and a major selling point.

Dining is varied across four a la carte outlets and two bars. FISH remains the signature overwater restaurant, serving beautifully presented seafood dishes. FIRE offers a relaxed grill concept. SIP continues as the island's sunset social hub, home to the clarified Angelfish Cocktail, with panoramic views and an elevated mixology programme. Kitchen serves as the main dining venue with a lively atmosphere, and the flexibility to order from different menus across outlets adds welcome variety.

The central area, incorporating the lounge, Wet Deck and main restaurant, has a contemporary, energetic feel, reinforced by W's signature soundtrack woven subtly through the pathways and social spaces. The metallic stiletto waterslide at the main pool remains a playful signature feature. Thoughtful touches like complimentary fuel stops with chilled drinks and towels along the pathways add to the experience.

Facilities include the AWAY Spa (currently being further enhanced), a well-equipped fitness centre, watersports centre and a resident marine biologist. The compact layout means everything is easily walkable while maintaining lush tropical planting throughout.

W Maldives will particularly appeal to couples and social travellers in their 30s to 50s who want a design-led environment, excellent reef access and a vibrant yet boutique setting. It offers a different energy from more understated competitors such as Park Hyatt or Baros, and for the right client, that confident, contemporary character is precisely the appeal.

Set on heart-shaped Fesdu Island in North Ari Atoll, W Maldives is a 25-minute seaplane transfer from Male. The resort sits on an outstanding house reef, one of the finest in the area, and also has access to the nearby private castaway island Gaathafushi. The Whatever/Whenever service sets a relaxed, responsive tone from the moment of arrival.

The property features 77 villas designed with a bio-boho approach that blends indoor and outdoor living. Large windows, natural light and carefully chosen furnishings create comfortable, functional spaces that reflect the island setting. Accommodation includes 46 one-bedroom overwater villas, 23 one-bedroom beach villas, four two-bedroom overwater villas and two two-bedroom beach villas. Every villa has a private pool, and some include water slides. The interiors use a neutral, warm colour palette that complements the natural landscape and keeps a consistent look throughout.

Dining at W Maldives covers several distinctive venues. FISH offers an ocean-to-table concept focused on the freshest seafood. SIP brings together Nikkei flavours with vibrant Latin American cocktails. FIRE serves smoky, beachside barbecue, while WET provides poolside bites and drinks designed for sharing throughout the day. The beverage programme includes a thoughtful selection of non-alcoholic options such as infused teas and botanical coffees. Throughout the year, the resort also hosts limited-time appearances from Michelin-starred chefs, renowned mixologists and emerging eateries from around the world.
