OZEN LIFE MAADHOO
Our Opinion
OZEN LIFE MAADHOO belongs to Atmosphere's OZEN Collection, set on a long, slender island along the eastern edge of South Male Atoll. Like most resorts close to Male, there is no house reef directly off the beach, but complimentary snorkelling excursions run twice daily and should cover most guests' needs.
The accommodation splits between Earth Villas on the beachfront and Wind Villas over the lagoon. Both are spacious and comfortable, though the Wind Villa decks could be a little larger. Some villas include private pools, all positioned on the sunset side. The Earth Pool Pavilion two-bedroom suites are especially generous and offer a practical solution for families wanting separate bedrooms without the premium price that often accompanies them.
What truly distinguishes OZEN LIFE is the Indulgence all-inclusive plan. Historically, all-inclusive in the Maldives has been a mixed experience, with house wines and generic spirits leaving guests feeling short-changed. Here the drinks list tells a very different story. Single malt whiskies, different Champagnes selected for specific outlets, and Cloudy Bay by the glass (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or Pinot Noir) are all part of the package. It changes the holiday experience when you are not watching every dollar add up.
The dining lives up to the billing. IndoCeylon serves what we believe is the best Indian food in the Maldives, at a standard that would hold its own in a top London restaurant. Raw offers excellent sushi and sashimi from a casual outdoor bar. M6m, the underwater restaurant, delivers a seven-course degustation with wine pairing while marine life drifts past the windows. Two and a half hours pass effortlessly, especially when you remember it is all included.
OZEN LIFE will not suit everyone. Those seeking a rustic, traditional island should look elsewhere. But as an all-inclusive luxury resort it set a new benchmark when it opened and continues to perform strongly. As long as the food and service remain at this level, it will keep filling its villas and has pushed well-established competitors to review their own offerings.
