Dining is a genuine highlight. Breakfast at Ocean is a daily joy, with the Maldivian breakfast a wonderful nod to local cuisine. The Shoreline Grill delivers excellent seafood served with sand beneath your feet, and the Teppanyaki Chef's Table and Wine Room tastings add welcome variety. Ba'theli remains a must — a magical overwater setting where Spice Route-inspired dishes arrive with precision, and sharks glide beneath the decks at dusk. The Compass Bar does a fine light lunch, with the Impossible Chilli Tacos a standout for plant-based diners, and Lucky's Angelfish Cocktail is complimentary for our guests.

The house reef, a short paddle from the sunrise beach, is in fine condition and teeming with marine life — turtles, reef sharks and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. The absence of motorised water sports keeps the reef undisturbed and the snorkelling sublime.

With just 50 villas, the facilities are intimate and well-judged. The overwater spa may be modest by some standards, but the treatments — especially the signature massage — are outstanding. The small gym offers glorious tropical lagoon views and stays quiet, with all the essentials.

Milaidhoo Island occupies a boutique corner of Baa Atoll, part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and conveniently close to Hanifaru Bay. Guests arrive by seaplane, a scenic 35-minute hop from Velana International Airport, to an island that has welcomed visitors since November 2016. The resort was shaped by Maldivian architect Mohamed Shafeeq, covering a modest 5.4 hectares of white sand and dense vegetation. Local materials and traditional craftsmanship feature throughout, delivering natural, island-inspired comfort with a light contemporary finish.

Accommodation

Accommodation is limited to 50 villas and residences, each furnished with its own private pool. Twenty-nine Water Pool Villas are raised on stilts above the lagoon, complete with private freshwater infinity pools and direct access to the reef. Eighteen Beach Pool Villas sit straight on the sand amongst the palm trees. Two generous Beach Residences (490 sqm) and a single two-bedroom Ocean Residence (564 sqm) round out the selection, the latter offering an oversized private pool and uninterrupted ocean views, and suiting families or groups of up to six.

All villas open 180 degrees to nature, so indoor and outdoor living flow together effortlessly. En suite bathrooms come with a soaking tub and separate rain shower, and guests will find private wine fridges, hanging Maldivian swings, large daybeds, sun loungers and Acqua di Parma toiletries. A 24/7 Island Host service includes unpacking and packing, and children over eight are welcome.

Dining

Dining at Milaidhoo is a highlight in its own right. Ba'theli by the Reef is the resort's signature venue and the only restaurant in the Maldives specialising in gourmet local island cuisine, drawing on the flavours of the Maldivian Spice Route. Its name honours the ancient wooden sailing vessels that once traded spices across the Indian Ocean, and the restaurant is built to resemble three boats floating above the reef, with barefoot dining encouraged.

Shoreline Grill brings superb meats and freshly caught local fish and seafood to the beachfront, cooked simply and presented beautifully. Choose a barefoot table on the sand in a private pavilion or a spot inside overlooking the show kitchen, and book the Chef's Table for a bespoke menu. Wine tastings with the sommelier can be arranged ahead of dinner.

The breakfast experience at Ocean Restaurant is one guests tend to rave about, with tables on a deck overlooking the water while the team delivers wave after wave of treats. Both breakfast and dinner are served in a casually comfortable style, with international dishes from an à la carte menu, locally sourced where possible.

For a laid-back lunch, Azure offers a toes-in-the-sand beach shack nestled amid screw pines. It captures authentic island life at its simplest, with gentle sea breezes and a chilled glass of wine in hand.

Beside the infinity pool, Compass Pool Bar looks out over the ocean and serves light meals alongside a tempting drinks list of fresh juices, infused waters, wines and cocktails. Come evening it becomes a laid-back lounge with aperitifs, after-dinner drinks and live entertainment.

Facilities & Activities

The overwater Serenity Spa houses four treatment rooms and a yoga pavilion, with facials, massage therapies, manicures and pedicures on the menu, alongside yoga, meditation, aerial yoga and in-villa treatments. On land, a 24-hour gym looks out over the lagoon.

The 5-star PADI dive centre welcomes everyone from novices to experienced divers. The lively house reef provides easy snorkelling access from the beach, with a resident marine biologist, a coral restoration programme and seasonal manta ray and whale shark encounters. Fishing trips, dolphin cruises, non-motorised water sports, traditional dhoni cruises, yacht cruises and visits to a nearby local island round out the options.
