Our Opinion
It is impossible to separate Soneva Jani from the story of Sonu and Eva Shivdasani. Their vision has grown steadily since Soneva Fushi first proved that luxury and environmental conscience could coexist in the Maldives, and each resort since has pushed the concept further. Jani is the most complete expression of that ambition yet.

The name, drawn from Sanskrit for wisdom, reflects the journey. Arriving across the vast shallow lagoon, the scale takes a moment to process. The silver-domed villas stretch away along the 1.4km jetty, and there is a real sense of occasion.

The overwater villas are built from ethically sourced timber and finished to the highest standard. Retractable roofs and waterslides feel natural here, not forced. The island villas are tucked into the greenery, steps from the beach, with private pools and total privacy.

The Gathering is the architectural centrepiece. This soaring wooden structure houses the main restaurant, bar, and lounge, and leads to the spa, fitness room, wine cellar, and an observatory with the largest telescope in the Maldives. It is as impressive as it is welcoming.

What stays with you about Soneva Jani is the way it balances opposites. It is rustic and refined, playful and sincere, extravagant and principled. The message is subtle but clear. You can care deeply about the environment and still enjoy a moment of indulgent escape.

The pricing reflects the level of ambition. Outstanding service, exceptional dining, and a location that feels almost impossibly beautiful. This is one for the list. And it will be fascinating to see where the Shivdasani journey goes from here.
Summary
Soneva Jani is set in the Noonu Atoll, surrounded by a 5.6 kilometre private lagoon of crystal-clear water. The name, meaning wisdom in Sanskrit, reflects the thoughtful design that defines the resort.

Transfers are by seaplane from Male, with the resort arranging all connections.

Accommodation consists of overwater villas and island sanctuaries. Each water villa is built from sustainably sourced timber and features a private pool, a retractable roof for stargazing from the bedroom, and direct lagoon access. Many include a slide from the upper deck into the water below. The island villas are set among lush tropical vegetation with private pools and direct access to the beach. Chapter Two has introduced 27 new Water Reserves, among the largest overwater residences in the Maldives, each with their own dedicated facilities.

Dining is a central part of the experience. The main restaurant, bar, and lounge are housed within The Gathering, a dramatic overwater structure that also contains the spa, fitness suite, wine cellar, and an observatory. Multiple dining venues offer international and local cuisine. The Soneva Unlimited package covers dining, beverages, spa treatments, and experiences across the resort.

The resort sits on islands fringed by white sand beaches and dense tropical vegetation, offering a true castaway setting with world-class facilities.
