Hurawalhi Island Resort & Spa

Our Opinion
Crown & Champa Resorts (CCR) had spent years perfecting four-star hospitality across the Maldives when they stepped confidently into the five-star arena in 2016. Hurawalhi, their first luxury property, sits in Lhaviyani Atoll near sister islands Komandoo and Kuredu — and it is strictly adults-only, which lends the island a wonderfully calm, unhurried atmosphere.

The villa design strikes a fine balance. All 30 Beach Villas come with private pools, and the 60 Ocean Villas (some with pools, some without) use natural materials throughout. They feel modern and roomy without tipping into ostentation. The Ocean Villa jetty curves elegantly away from the island, looking more graceful than its length would suggest. Getting into the water from the sun decks is straightforward too — gently sloping steps rather than awkward steel ladders.

The communal spaces share the same refined aesthetic. A sand-floored welcome pavilion sets the tone, and the restaurant and bar complexes — both on land and over water — are thoughtfully laid out. The fitness centre is a standout: aerial yoga sessions and a treadmill with a view straight over the lagoon. Beyond the gym there are football, tennis and padel courts, and a games room with table tennis, pool and pinball that actually felt grown-up (no children commandeering the tables). The overwater Duniye Spa is understated but effective.

Snorkellers are well catered for. The house reef encircles the island, with only the harbour entrance and the deep channel beyond the water villas off limits. A clear map marks zones for beginners, intermediates and advanced snorkellers, along with the channels leading to the drop-off. The variety of marine life in both the lagoon and on the reef edge left a strong impression.

Dining is one of Hurawalhi's real strengths. Canneli Restaurant serves high-quality buffets with live cooking stations and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating spaced well apart. JFK (Junk Food Kitchen) delivers creative streetfood-inspired dishes with a notably strong vegetarian offering. Kashibo, the overwater Asian fusion restaurant, would stand out as a signature venue almost anywhere — it has a Teppanyaki counter and a carefully chosen wine cellar. But the real showstopper is 5.8, the underwater fine-dining experience. For drinks, Coco Bar pulls double duty as a pool bar by day and cocktail hub by night, Kashibo's bar enjoys a lovely overwater perch, and the Tattinger Champagne Pavilion — bubbles and canapés at sunset — is hard to beat. Meal plans span from B&B upwards, and the All Inclusive Plus package ranks among the best AI offerings in the Maldives, even if it doesn't cover 5.8.

Service is where Hurawalhi truly distinguishes itself. The resort benefits from CCR's deep operational experience — the island runs with polished efficiency, every outlet delivers attentive service, and the management inspires real confidence. You can have all the beautiful hardware in the world, but without the software to back it up it counts for little. Hurawalhi has both.

For a complete, modern, adult-focused escape, Hurawalhi ticks an impressive number of boxes. It is not the cheapest option, but neither is it at the very top of the price scale, and it delivers a rounded experience that some more expensive, more famous brands struggle to match. CCR's move upmarket has paid off handsomely, and the resort earns its place on our Highly Recommended list without hesitation.

Summary
Hurawalhi sits in the Lhaviyani Atoll, a 40-minute seaplane flight north of Velana International Airport. The island is ringed by white sand beaches, a sheltered lagoon and an excellent house reef.

Accommodation
The resort offers 90 villas in two categories: Beach Villas (all with private pools) and overwater Ocean Villas. Guests aged 15 and over only.

Recreation and Activities
An infinity freshwater pool overlooks the ocean. Sports facilities include artificial-turf football, tennis and padel courts, plus a fitness centre with personal trainer. On the water, guests can try jet skis, parasailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, fun-tubes, windsurfing, kayaks and catamaran sailing, with group and private speedboat excursions available.

The on-site Prodivers centre runs scheduled guided diving and snorkelling trips, rents and repairs equipment, and operates a full PADI 5-star training facility. A hyperbaric chamber is available at nearby Kuredu Resort.

The Manta Trust Marine Biology Centre
The Maldives is home to the world's largest known reef manta ray population. The Manta Trust, a UK-based marine conservation charity, works through Hurawalhi's resident marine biologist to run guest workshops and educational trips focused on manta ray and habitat conservation.
