Boutique Beach
Our Opinion
We met Boutique Beach's owner Romney Drury and accepted her invitation to visit — and were immediately taken by the warmth of manager Afzal and his team. This is the Maldives stripped of pretension, and it is utterly charming.
The hotel sits a short walk or a moped ride from Dhigurah's harbour. There are no airs and graces here, just genuine hospitality and honest food served in a sand-floored restaurant or up on the roof terrace. The rooms are spacious, comfortably furnished, and well thought out for divers — plenty of space for gear, good beds, semi-open shower rooms, and enough sockets to charge cameras and torches. The two larger front rooms would work well for four sharing on a budget.
Dhigurah's position in the South Ari Atoll is superb for diving and snorkelling. The hotel has only six rooms, so excursions are flexible and arranged day by day according to what guests want to do. Famous dive sites are minutes away, and the lagoon itself is known for manta rays and young whale sharks — we swam with two on our visit. The new dive centre near the harbour is modern and well-equipped, with fully inclusive packages covering up to three dives per day.
Staying on a local island is a very different experience from a resort. Dhigurah is a 3km-long island with about 600 people, all living at the northern end. The rest is jungle and empty beach. If you want solitude, the hotel will pack you a picnic and send you off. There is no alcohol on the island in keeping with local custom, though evening trips to a resort bar can be arranged.
A few nights here — experiencing real Maldivian life with serious diving time — would be the perfect counterpoint to a resort stay nearby. A twin-stay arrangement with a speedboat between the two is an excellent way to experience both sides of the Maldives.

Summary
Boutique Beach is situated on Dhigurah in the South Ari Atoll, a marine protected area where whale sharks and manta rays are spotted daily. The island itself stretches 3km in length with over 3km of natural white sand beach, yet is home to only around 600 people concentrated in the northern end.
Reaching the hotel involves a 20-minute domestic flight from Male' to Maamigili, with local ferry and speedboat transfers also available.
The property offers six spacious, private rooms with simple pleasant decor, comfortable beds, partially open shower rooms, and ample charging sockets. Two of the larger rooms at the front can comfortably sleep four on a tighter budget. There is plenty of room for dive gear in all rooms.
Dining is served in a sand-floored restaurant or on the large roof terrace, offering honest, hearty food to refuel between activities. The hotel has its own modern, well-equipped dive centre near the harbour, offering NITROX and a full range of excursions. Fully inclusive packages include up to three dives per day and various excursions, arranged daily based on guests' collective preferences.
Boutique Beach was created by British diver Romney Drury, who wanted to offer a genuine Maldivian diving experience at a more accessible price point. Staying here means experiencing local island life among friendly Dhigurah residents, with deserted beaches and jungle to explore at the southern end of the island — the hotel can even pack a picnic lunch for a private day out.
