Our Opinion

Named for the magnificent banyan tree at its centre, Nika is a resort with genuine character — one of the first built in the Maldives and still unmistakably traditional in feel. Set in the North Ari Atoll, it has a wonderfully authentic atmosphere that sets it apart from the glossy newcomers.

For many years the island catered primarily to the Italian market, but it now welcomes guests from all over the world who are drawn to its relaxed, unpretentious style. It's the kind of place where the Maldivian spirit of the early days is still very much alive.

Nika Island Resort sits in North Ari Atoll, a 20-25 minute seaplane journey from Male. The island has a wonderfully unspoiled character, built in the traditional Maldivian style with coral blocks, coconut palm trunks and palm leaves.

There are 44 villas, decorated with antiques and traditional Maldivian artwork that reflect the island's heritage.

Guests can dine at the restaurant and bar, which serves Maldivian, Asian and European cuisine, or grab a lighter bite at the coffee shop. The Lotus Spa offers a range of massage and beauty treatments, while the main draw is the Maldives' spectacular underwater world — the house reef is easily accessible and the surrounding dive sites are well worth exploring.
