Our Opinion

Fushifaru welcomed its first guests in November 2017, and we were there just weeks later that December. Maldivian-owned and managed, the island carries a genuinely traditional character given a light contemporary edge — unhurried, unpretentious, and a long way from the all-inclusive crowd.

The beach wraps around most of the island, fine white sand held in place by groynes that do their quiet work against the channel currents on either side. The lagoon is a deep, vivid turquoise, calm enough for easy swimming and regularly visited by dolphins and rays threading through the channels.

Villas span beach and overwater, some with private pools, covering a useful range of budgets and group sizes.

Dining centres on the main buffet restaurant — open-sided, sand-and-tile floors, lagoon views — with The Grill offering a more relaxed alternative: proper feet-in-the-sand dining under an open sky.

Summary

Fushifaru sits on the eastern edge of Lhaviyani Atoll, around 35 minutes from Malé by seaplane. The island is flanked by Fushifaru Thila — a protected marine reserve and well-regarded dive site accessible by short boat ride — and a sandbank on the opposite side.
