Our Opinion

JOALI is a striking new ultra-luxury resort driven by eco-consciousness and a deep appreciation for art and design. The island is scattered with original sculptures and installations from boundary-pushing artists — the two enormous manta rays suspended through the trees are unmissable, and you can step inside the larger one via a raised wooden walkway.

With just 73 generously proportioned villas, each with a private pool and butler service, the atmosphere is intimate and exclusive. The water villas stretch along a 1.3km jetty, and the interiors are contemporary, refined, and beautifully understated.

During our soft-opening visit, some construction was still being completed, and there were pockets where replanting was underway. Beach management is supported by a sand barge and pump system.

Dining and service are exceptional across the board. The overwater Japanese restaurant Soake is a highlight, and the tuna tacos at Mura Bar are not to be missed.

Snorkellers will find good spots in three areas around the island, and the dive team can guide you to the best options depending on the tides. If marine biologist Sam is on island, seek her out — she leads a passionate coral conservation programme and is well worth a conversation.

JOALI is positioning itself among the very best resorts in the Maldives, and it has assembled a talented, experienced team drawn from other top-tier properties under the stewardship of the highly respected GM Steven Philips. Whether it will sustain that ambition at every level remains to be seen, but the early signs suggest it is well on its way.

Summary

JOALI sits on Muravandhoo island in the Raa Atoll, one of the Maldives' largest and deepest atolls, renowned for its rich marine life. Expect dazzling azure waters and powdery white beaches edged with swaying coconut palms.

Guests are welcomed at the private JOALI lounge at Male International Airport before a scenic 40-minute seaplane transfer to the island.
