JOALI BEING
Our Opinion
JOALI BEING is something genuinely different in the Maldives -- the country's first purpose-built wellbeing island, designed from the ground up around the Four Pillars of Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy. This isn't a resort with an excellent spa attached; the whole property, from the architecture to the 39-treatment-room wellness centre and structured personal programmes, has been conceived to deliver a transformative health experience. The ambition is real, and it shows in every detail.
The facilities are exceptional. A hydrotherapy sanctuary offering Watsu therapy, Banya steam room, Aufguss sauna and Turkish Hammam; a 16-metre movement studio with panoramic ocean views; a herbology apothecary led by a resident practitioner; and a Sound Discovery Path with sculptural instruments set among the trees. Dining is guided by in-house nutritionists, giving the food real intention and thoughtfulness -- but there is also overwater Japanese, teppanyaki, and a treehouse cocktail bar, so nothing about it feels restrictive.
It shares DNA with sister property JOALI, just fifteen minutes away by boat, and the connection speaks volumes about the standard here. Same eye for detail, same uncompromising approach -- but the experience is entirely its own.
That said, this resort has a clear identity, and it won't suit everyone. The wellbeing programmes are the main event, and a stay demands a substantial investment of both time and money. For guests seeking a properly guided, immersive reset with expert support across every dimension of wellness, there is arguably nowhere more comprehensive in the region. For those after a classic beach holiday with the option of a massage, the balance shifts decisively in the other direction.

Summary
JOALI BEING occupies the secluded island of Bodufushi in Raa Atoll, described as the world's first purpose-built wellbeing island. It is the sister property to JOALI Maldives, connected by a fifteen-minute boat transfer, and approximately 45 minutes by seaplane from Velana International Airport in Male, with access via the JOALI private lounge.
The resort is structured around the Four Pillars -- Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy -- developed in collaboration with Professor Gerry Bodeker of Oxford University. Every stay begins with an Integrative Lifestyle Assessment and in-depth consultation, producing a fully tailored programme that runs from five nights to three weeks, supported by a resident team of naturopaths, therapists, movement specialists and Ayurvedic practitioners.
Accommodation comprises 68 villas spread across the island and overwater. Entry-level Ocean Pool Villas start at 260 square metres with a private deck and pool, rising to the Four-Bedroom Private Wellbeing Ocean Pool Residence at 1,700 square metres, positioned overwater with an infinity pool, private treatment room and movement area. All villas include a customised Wellbeing Bar with teas and tonics, balancing instruments, and a personal Jadugar butler. Categories include Beach Pool Villas, Ocean Pool Villas, Wellness Beach Pool Villas with dedicated treatment rooms, and multi-bedroom residences for families or groups.
Dining is overseen by the island's nutritionists, balancing wellness-oriented and indulgent options. FLOW is the main restaurant housing three concepts: Su (live-fire robata grill), Plantae (plant-based cuisine), and B'Well (nutritionally balanced menus aligned with guest programmes). Rakuzen Teppanyaki offers overwater teppanyaki in an intimate setting. Yutori serves overwater Japanese cuisine featuring wagyu and fresh seafood. MOJO is a poolside grill and bar; SAI is a dedicated teahouse for matcha and specialty teas; and the Turtle Treehouse is an elevated bar among the canopy for sundowners.
The wellness facilities are the heart of the experience. Areka is a two-storey centre with 39 treatment rooms. KAASHI is a hydrotherapy sanctuary with a Banya steam room, Watsu warm-water therapy pool, Aufguss sauna, Turkish Hammam and experience showers. CORE is a 16-metre ocean-view movement studio for yoga, pilates and meditation. AKTAR is a herbology apothecary offering one-to-one consultations and custom blend creation. Other facilities include the Sound Discovery Path, SEDA yoga pavilion, LOTUS overwater group space, a cryotherapy chamber, and a Watsu pool. Targeted wellbeing programmes address strength, mental clarity, hormonal balance, women's health, digestion, sleep, and movement.
Additional amenities include the Art House creative studio, a Marine Centre with guided snorkelling, the Okyanus coral reef restoration project, floodlit tennis and padel courts with a resident coach, and a boutique.
The resort holds EarthCheck Silver Certification for sustainability, with on-island infrastructure including a desalination water bottling plant, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, glass crushing, food waste composting, and a biological wastewater treatment system. JOALI BEING also collaborates with local communities on reforestation and offsets carbon for all guest stays.
