Niyama Private Islands
Our Opinion
Niyama divides opinion, and that is very much the point. Spread across two islands, it offers two distinct experiences in one holiday. Chill Island is adults-focused and polished. Play Island leans into family life with purpose-built facilities and a relaxed energy. The design is contemporary throughout. If you are looking for rustic, traditional Maldives, this is not it. But if you appreciate bold architecture, thoughtful technology, and a resort that is unafraid to be different, Niyama has plenty to offer.
The dining is adventurous. Epicurean travellers will find genuine interest in the line-up, particularly at Tribal, which introduces molecular gastronomy to the Maldives in a theatrical setting. Subsix, the underwater club, is a genuine landmark. The spa is well-regarded. The marine biology lab adds an educational dimension that works particularly well for families.
Niyama is confident, modern, and deliberately unconventional. It will not suit everyone, but it does not try to.

Summary
Niyama occupies two islands in the Dhaalu Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane ride from Male. One island is designed primarily for adults, the other for families, so the experience you have depends largely on where you stay. The accommodation across both islands amounts to 134 villas and pavilions, all contemporary in feel.
Facilities are broad and ambitious. There is an on-site marine biology lab, a well-regarded spa, multiple restaurants including one that brings molecular gastronomy to the Maldives, and Subsix, the world's first underwater club. The range of activities is unusually wide, and the dual-island layout means there is genuinely something for different travel styles.
It is a striking, modern resort with real character. Best suited to guests who value design, diverse dining, and a lively atmosphere over traditional island seclusion.
