The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands is a strikingly contemporary resort where bold architecture meets the natural drama of the Indian Ocean. The villas are extraordinary, with soaring ceilings, expansive glass, and retracting walls that dissolve the line between indoors and the turquoise lagoon beyond. From the bed, you look straight out across the water. The two-bedroom beach pool villas are particularly well-suited to families, offering generous living space and real privacy.

Facilities rival the very best in the Maldives. The over-water spa is a showstopper, suspended above the lagoon with a design that feels cinematic rather than conventional. The Jean-Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment centre brings one of the most sophisticated marine biology programmes in the country to guests of all ages. The Ritz Kids Club is superb, with genuinely creative activities that go well beyond the standard craft session. Evenings at the Eau Bar come with a sunset fire ritual that adds a theatrical touch. The resort spreads across three linked islands, giving it a spacious, discoverable feel that rewards exploration by bicycle or on foot.

There are some considerations. Dining options are limited for a resort of this calibre, though Fari Marina Village is a short boat shuttle away and adds welcome variety. The island is man-made, so the landscaping is still maturing, which means some pathways feel exposed during the heat of the day. There is no house reef, so serious snorkellers will need to join a boat excursion. Service during our visit was somewhat uneven. And the pricing places it firmly among the most expensive resorts in the Maldives, in direct competition with the absolute top tier.

For travellers who prize design, space, and contemporary luxury over a traditional castaway feel, the Ritz-Carlton Maldives is a visually stunning and genuinely impressive choice.
