Jawakara Islands

Overview

Dining
Our Opinion
Jawakara Islands makes a strong impression from the air — two distinct islands linked by a jetty across a broad, turtle-filled lagoon on the eastern edge of Lhaviyani Atoll, just 35 minutes from Malé by seaplane.

The two-island concept works well. Mabin is the larger, livelier side, with over 200 villas, most of the facilities, and a real sense of energy — it's built for families and groups who want plenty to do. Dheru is smaller and noticeably quieter, with only 88 villas and a more exclusive feel, though the same villa categories and dining flexibility apply. It gives you a genuine choice of atmosphere without having to switch resorts.

The villas follow Crown & Champa's familiar design language — practical, comfortable, boxy in form but well laid out inside. The multi-room villas are a standout for families travelling with children of different ages, and they're priced competitively for what you get.

Getting around is well handled. On Mabin, a regular buggy service keeps things moving across the 1.4km island. On Dheru it's more personal — villa hosts on WhatsApp for on-demand pickups. Bicycles are complimentary on Premium AI and reasonably priced otherwise.

The beach quality is mixed. Some areas have been reclaimed, and the sunrise side can be noticeably corally underfoot — we'd recommend a sunrise-side villa to make the most of it. Snorkelling in the lagoon is gentle, with the occasional turtle sighting, but serious snorkellers will want the twice-daily boat trips to the reef, which are complimentary.

Dining is a real positive. Dheru's Vela delivers an excellent buffet with live cooking stations and a standout cold room. On Mabin, Saima and Aila offer similar quality in a more compact format. UMI, the overwater Asian restaurant, is the highlight for a la carte — popular for good reason. Molo does Mediterranean well, and Hideout at the golf course is a welcome surprise for a clubhouse meal.

Where Jawakara really shines is facilities. A proper dive centre, multiple gyms, two spas, games rooms, and a genuinely excellent kids' club. The golf offering is unexpected and well done — driving range, a short course, and a simulator for when the Maldivian sun gets too much.

Jawakara doesn't reinvent the Maldivian resort concept, but it executes the large-scale formula with real confidence. It's a versatile, well-priced option — particularly strong for active families who want variety, space, and a proper range of things to do.

Summary
Jawakara Islands is a dual-island resort on the eastern rim of Lhaviyani Atoll, reachable by a 35-minute seaplane transfer from Malé. The two islands — Mabin and Dheru — are connected by a jetty spanning a lagoon known for its turtle population.

Mabin is the larger island at 1.4km, housing over 200 villas and the majority of the resort's facilities. It offers a wide range of accommodation including multi-room villas suited to families and groups. Dining plans range from bed and breakfast to Premium All-Inclusive. Dheru is the quieter counterpart with 88 villas, offering the same categories and meal flexibility in a more exclusive setting.

Accommodation follows Crown & Champa's established villa design — practical and comfortable, with multi-room options a highlight for families. Mabin operates a shuttle buggy service while Dheru uses WhatsApp-based villa host requests for on-demand transport. Bicycles are complimentary for Premium All-Inclusive guests.

Dining spans six restaurants and bars across both islands. Highlights include Vela (Dheru's buffet with live cooking stations), UMI (overwater Asian a la carte), Molo (Mediterranean), and Hideout (clubhouse dining at the golf course). Saima and Aila on Mabin offer buffet dining in a more compact setting.

Facilities are extensive and a key strength. The resort features the Sulha Spa (land-based on Mabin, overwater on Dheru), the Jawa Kids club, a fully equipped ProDivers dive
centre, and MSTS watersports offering jet skis, wakeboarding, kayaking, and catamaran sailing. Sports facilities include tennis, padel, futsal, badminton, a fitness centre, and a pitch-and-putt golf course with driving range and simulator.

The lagoon offers gentle snorkelling with occasional turtle sightings. The house reef is accessible via complimentary twice-daily boat trips. A medical clinic with a resident doctor is available on Mabin.

Jawakara Islands suits active families and groups who want a wide range of facilities, good dining choices, and the flexibility of two different island atmospheres within one resort.
