Velaa Private Island consistently ranks among the Maldives' finest resorts, an achievement that speaks volumes given the calibre of competition. It also commands a price tag to match, so the natural question is whether it delivers on its promise.

The island itself is visually stunning. A broad sweep of soft white sand circles the shoreline, while the interior is thick with mature palms and carefully curated tropical planting that walks the line between jungle wildness and elegant landscaping. It feels special from the moment you arrive, and exploring the pathways on foot or by bike is a daily pleasure.

Service at Velaa is exceptional. From the moment you are met at Male with a luxury transfer to the seaplane terminal, through to departure, the staff to guest ratio is generous enough that assistance is always nearby. The approach strikes a difficult balance: polished and professional, yet warm and natural.

Accommodation consists of 47 villas, starting with the 287sqm Beach Pool Villa, which is notably the only category without a separate living room, and rising to the substantial four-bedroom private residences. Every villa features a king-size bed, large private pool, indoor-outdoor bathroom, butler service, and a well-stocked wine fridge and minibar. Between the two styles, the overwater villas feel more contemporary, with brighter artwork and splashes of colour. The beach villas are slightly more traditional in layout and design, though we are talking about marginal differences: both are kept in pristine condition and offer genuinely lovely living spaces.

Under Executive Chef Gaushan de Silva, dining reaches exceptional heights. The overwater Aragu is the standout, delivering what we consider the finest meal we have had in the Maldives, with cooking and presentation that would not look out of place in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Faiy, set within the wellness village, produces inspired pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan dishes. The beachside Athiri offers varied international cuisine, and the soaring 21-metre Tavaru combines theatrical teppanyaki with a breathtaking wine cellar. The Cru Champagne bar in Aragu, the lively Avi Bar, and the relaxed Beach Bar each have their own character and all succeed in their own way.

On the facilities front, Velaa is unusually comprehensive. The overwater spa is now complemented by the Eveylaa Wellbeing village, offering everything from Ayurvedic consultations to sensory deprivation tanks, yoga and Pilates. Sports facilities include a covered tennis court, squash and padel courts, a climbing wall, and an extensive gym. The kids club features its own water park, while older children will appreciate the games centre. The watersports centre stocks the latest motorised and non-motorised toys. The Velaa Golf Academy by Olazabal offers a nine-hole short course maintained to an impeccable standard, playable barefoot and available for exclusive hire.

The house reef provides good snorkelling with healthy marine life and an active coral restoration programme run by the marine biology team, which uses electrified frames to accelerate coral growth. Nearby reefs offer further options for both snorkelling and diving.

Velaa ticks an extraordinary number of boxes. However, it is only bookable on a bed and breakfast basis, meaning lunches, dinners, drinks and extras add up. We recommend budgeting around $1,000 per couple per day for the in-resort spend if you want to enjoy the restaurants, wine, treatments and excursions without constraint.

If you are comfortable with the cost, Velaa delivers on its promise and then some. Life is short.

Interiors combine natural materials with refined contemporary design, while the larger residences include private gyms, spa rooms and extensive entertainment areas. A personal butler is assigned to every guest, regardless of villa category.

Dining at Velaa is notably diverse and accomplished. Aragu, the overwater signature restaurant, focuses on contemporary European cuisine with subtle Asian accents, pairing creativity and precision with an exceptional wine programme. Athiri is the relaxed, beachfront all-day option, offering a broad international menu with live cooking stations and a wood-fired oven. Tavaru, set in the Maldives' tallest resort building, specialises in teppanyaki, with chef-led theatrics and panoramic views; its wine cellar holds over 1,000 labels. Faiy, within the wellbeing village, serves clean, health-conscious dishes built around natural ingredients. For drinks, the overwater Cru Champagne Bar, the atmospheric Avi Bar, and the casual Beach Bar provide variety across the day and into the evening.

The Velaa Spa and Eveylaa Wellbeing village form a comprehensive wellness offering, combining overwater treatment villas, a snow room, sensory deprivation tanks, and programmes incorporating Ayurveda, yoga, and Pilates. The sports and recreation facilities are extensive, including a covered tennis court, padel courts, squash court, football pitch, climbing wall, and a Technogym-equipped fitness centre. The watersports centre is equally well appointed, with jet skis, seabobs, wakeboards, flyboards, and electric foil surfboards among its inventory. The Velaa Golf Academy by Olazabal, designed by Jose Maria Olazabal, features a nine-hole course with multiple configurations, PGA professional coaching, and a Trackman simulator.

The house reef offers good snorkelling with diverse marine life, and the on-site marine biology team runs an innovative coral restoration programme. The PADI dive centre provides courses and excursions to nearby reefs. For younger guests, the Lha Velaa Kids Club offers a seaplane-themed playground, interactive zones, and creative pavilions.
