Our Opinion

We have stayed on this island several times over the years, back when it was known as Jumeirah and later Raffles, so we know it well. Now that it has joined Marriott's Autograph Collection, we are keen to see what the next chapter brings.

The house reef here is exceptional and one of the resort's real highlights. It has held up better than many others against rising ocean temperatures, and during our dives we found plenty of marine activity alongside encouraging signs of coral regrowth in areas that were previously damaged.

The Halcyon Private Isles Maldives sits in the quieter reaches of Gaafu Alifu Atoll, an area that feels genuinely remote even by Maldivian standards. Colonial-inspired architecture meets relaxed island living here, and the pace is deliberately unhurried. This is a place for guests who want to settle in properly and feel at home from the moment they arrive.

Accommodation ranges from beachfront villas with wide waterfront views to overwater villas suspended above a clear lagoon. The Halcyon Grand Estate is the resort's most expansive offering, a three-bedroom beachfront manor with a rooftop terrace, a private pool, and direct lagoon access.

Dining is varied and thoughtfully placed. Thari serves Mediterranean-Asian all-day dining steps from the shore. Yuzu offers Peruvian-Japanese fusion over the water, from citrus-bright ceviche to delicate sashimi. Bell Bar is an oceanfront cocktail and wine spot. Yapa Sunset Bar sits beside Yuzu, serving sake, pisco, and mezcal cocktails with artful tapas as the evening sets in. The Wine Room hosts chef-led tastings and mixology sessions.

The Halcyon Spa delivers personalised treatments using sustainable products and techniques drawn from traditional Maldivian practices, with the option to book in-villa therapies. The house reef offers excellent snorkelling and diving, with a resident marine biologist on hand to guide conservation-focused excursions. Guests can also join turtle-watching trips to learn about the 25 resident sea turtles and the protection measures in place around them. The Happy Kids club keeps younger visitors entertained with coconut painting, sand art, marine biology activities, and treasure hunts.
